Mr George Massey Long Innes, Crown Prosecutor.
PECULIAR BIGAMY.
Robert Lett (21) pleaded guilty to having on December 8 unlawfully married Laura Miles, his wife. Harriet Argyle Beckwith, being then alive. Mr Crick applied for the accused to be dealt with under the First Offenders’ Act . It was explained that the accused married his first wife, who was enciente [sic–enceinte, pregnant] prior to her marriage, without the knowledge of his parents. The girl Laura Miles also found herself in a similar condition, and to satisfy her, the accused, with the consent of his parents, who knew nothing of the first marriage, married her. Mr Crick stated that the lawful wife intended to apply for a divorce, on which, if granted, the accused would marry the other girl. His Honor refused to deal with the accused as requested, but remarks that, in view of the circumstances, he would deal lightly with Lett, who was then sentenced to 12 months’ hard labor in Darlinghurst Gaol.
CRIMINAL OFFENCE
Arthur John [or Arthur George] Snelson, a young man, was charged with having on February 8, at Waverley, committed a criminal offence, [buggery upon a boy, aged 11]. The accused, who was defended by Mr Walker, pleaded not guilty. For the defence an alibi was endeavored [sic] to be proved, but the jury, after an hour’s retirement, returned a verdict of guilty, and the accused was remanded for sentence.
