COURT FOR ASHFIELD.
———
Considerable interest has been aroused locally by the minute presented by the Mayor of Ashfield to his council on the matter of the need for the establishment of a petty sessions court in that neighbourhood, and it is hoped that some definite measure of good may result. There is, indeed, nothing new in Alderman Josephson’s contention that a court is needed, but his minute was terse, weighted with good argument, and peculiarly apropos in view of recent statements relative to some alleged forthcoming strengthening of the suburban police force. At present the position is unpleasantly inconvenient. Any man in the western suburbs with court business to transact has at present to waste time and patience by recourse to an overworked court at Newtown or the Glebe. To one of these he has to go if he wants to take out a dog licence, or use for the recovery of a small debt, and to one of these the pettiest lawbreaker has to be taken under existing conditions. Obviously, there is need of alteration, and the proposal to establish a court at Ashfield shows one way out of a somewhat foolish and out-of-date position. Anyway, the population of the outer western suburbs is now very large—fully large enough, at any rate, to warrant the authorities in considering its convenience in a matter of this simple kind. That is the gist of the Mayor of Ashfield’s contention, and his proposal, that being considered, is reasonable and businesslike.
