APPEAL LODGED.
———◦———
RAILWAY WORKER SENTENCED.

Leslie James Godfrey, [aka Leslie Godfrey], 2 a railway employee, was charged at the Kogarah Court last Tuesday, with committing an offence against decency in Firth Street, Arncliffe, on May 27. Defendant pleaded not guilty and he was defended by Mr Studdert.

Constable Sweeney, of No. 2 Station, gave evidence relating to defendant being lined up with other men and being identified by George Martin and Robert Thorne, as the man they saw in Firth Street, Arncliffe, on the night of May 27.

Alfred Ernest McDonald, a foreman, stated that at about 7.35 on the night in question his daughter told him something, and upon going to the front gate, he saw defendant pull his overcoat open while a girl was passing, and he saw that the man’s trousers were disarranged. Two men Thorne and Martin, arrived, and he told them what had happened. They held defendant, while witness went to ring up the police, and when he returned, Thorne knocked Godfrey down, saying that would do him good. Witness said defendant then got up and ran away.

Defendant [Leslie James Godfrey] gave evidence denying the charge, and said he was home with his wife that night, until he went to work at 10.30. He had not seen Thorne or Martin in his life, before they picked him out at the police station, and he was astounded.

Corroborative evidence, was given by Edith May Godfrey, defendant’s wife.

Mr McDougall sentenced Godfrey to six months’ imprisonment.

    Notice of appeal was lodged.
