SALOON-KEEPER FINED £20.
——

When convicted at the Burwood Police Court yesterday upon a charge of having used his billiard saloon in the George’s River-road, Croydon Park, for the purpose of betting, Gilbert Paine, a tobacconist, asked Mr Fletcher, SM, through his solicitor, Mr CP White, to order the return of his betting books, as he desired to keep faith with people who had bet with him. He would not be able to pay them their winnings if he did not have the books. Mr Fletcher declined to accede to the request, but said that the police might allow him access to the books.

Paine pleaded guilty to the charge, and Sergeant Crocker said that he had found eight people betting with defendant, when he went to his billiard saloon last Saturday. Betting books found in the premises contained records of 221 bets—nearly all small bets—made that day.

It was stated on behalf of the defendant that he had foolishly taken up betting in order to recoup himself for his business losses.

Mr Fletcher imposed a fine of £20.
