SIX MONTHS’ GAOL
———◦———
“COMMUNITY MENACE”
————
OFFENSIVE CONDUCT
————

Three charges of having behaved in an offensive manner, two of which related to October, 1924, and one to December 30, were preferred against Cyril Charles Taylor, aged 31, before Mr Flynn, SM, in the Newcastle Police Court to-day.

Taylor pleaded guilty to the first two charges, saying that he did not know what he had done, as he was under the influence of liquor.

He was fined £5, in default two months’ imprisonment on each charge.

Revolting evidence was taken relating to the third charge.

The magistrate altered it to one of importuning for immoral purposes, and a sentence of six months’ imprisonment was imposed, to be cumulative with one of the two months sentences.

The magistrate said that Taylor was a menace to the community. Credit was due to the man who brought the matter under the notice of the police.

FOUR MONTHS’ IMPRISONMENT.

Cyril Charles Taylor, 33, seaman, was charged, that on January 4, being a suspected person, he was found frequenting Hunter-street, Newcastle, a street leading to navigable waters, to wit Port Hunter, with intent to commit a felony, to wit stealing.

Constable McMahon said about 12.30 am on January 4 he saw the defendant in Hunter-0street, Newcastle, and kept him under observation for some time, and saw him go into RA Baker’s doorway. Defendant did not see witness when he approached, and asked what he was trying the locks for, made no reply. When arrested, defendant was thoroughly sober.

In a statement from the dock, defendant [Cyril Charles Taylor] said he came by the boat from Sydney to Newcastle on the Saturday night. He stayed at a place in Hunter-street, and wandered around for some time, finally making up his mind to go to Carrington, where he usually stayed. As he was making his way towards Carrington, he looked into a window, and was standing in a doorway when he felt somebody taking hold of him. In imposing a sentence of four months’ hard labour, the magistrate said that defendant’s explanation was too weak to be believed.

ASSAULT ON SHIP.
————
SEAMAN SENT TO GAOL.

Arising out of a dispute which occurred on the motor ship Wanganella, between Sydney and Melbourne, Cyril Charles Taylor, seaman, was charged at the City Court yesterday with “unlawful assault on the high seas.”

Edward Joseph Sibley, seaman, of the Wanganella, said a few minutes after midnight on 6th August, he was engaged with Taylor in treating a deck with holystone and sand. The holystone, which was twelve inches long and six inches thick weighed 14 lb. Witness spoke to accused about bringing some sand on to the deck. Taylor replied, “What is the matter with you?” Taylor had asked witness to inform a man named Russell that he would not work with him, but witness, passing a remark, refused to do so. Later witness was bending over the deck when Taylor hit him over the head with a holystone. He also punched witness against the deck rail. Witness ran towards the navigating bridge and an officer intervened. He had four stitches inserted in a wound in his head.

Taylor said he was annoyed by a remark made by Sibley. He was an annoying type of man. Accused had only meant to frighten him, but had accidentally struck him.

Mr McLean, PM, remarking that Taylor was fortunate not to be in court on another charge, sentenced him to three months’ imprisonment.

“ASSAULT ON THE HIGH
SEAS”
———◦———
SEAMAN CONVICTED
————

Melbourne, Friday.

Just after midnight on August 6, somewhere between Melbourne and Sydney, two seamen quarrelled as they were “scowing” [sic] the boat deck of the Wanganella with holystones and sand.

The result was that Cyril Charles Taylor was convicted of “assault on the high seas” and sentenced to three months’ imprisonment in the City Court today.

Edward Joseph Sibley, an AB on the MV Wanganella told the court of the argument and stated that he received a stunning blow on the back of the head from Taylor’s holystone, which weighed about 14 pounds. Four stiches were inserted by the ship’s doctor and he had to attend the Melbourne Hospital when the ship arrived.

Taylor stated that the blow was struck accidentally, as he only made a poke at Sibley to frighten him, but Sibley ducked and caught the blow on the head. He also added that he was greatly provoked by Sibley’s constant nagging.

WILL LECTURE BOY

“This boy wants a good talking to, and I hope the police will do so,” said Mr AE Aitkin, CSM, yesterday, when a labourer was sent to gaol for assault on a boy in the Botanic Gardens.

“Fancy a boy of 14 lying asleep in the gardens at that hour (1.30 pm),” said the magistrate.

The defendant, Cyril Charles Taylor, 54, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment.

Sub-Inspector JE Donovan said that the boy instead of going to work used to go to the gardens to fill in time.
