ALLEGED ASSAULT.
James Bradley was charged with an improper assault [on Edward Eli Charles Bradford, 13] at Wickham on July 2. The accused who pleaded not guilty, was unrepresented. Sergeant [Gustave James] Borthwick, of Wickham, after giving evidence of arrest, was questioned by his Honor regarding the mental condition of the accused, who had been under medical observation. A cunning disposition, he said, was a common feature among weak-minded people. Inspector [John] Ramsay volunteered that accused had been in the cells below since the opening of the court on Tuesday. Other prisoners stated that he was mad and objected to remaining with him in the same cell. After a brief retirement, the jury returned a verdict of guilty. His Honor in passing a sentence of twelve months’ imprisonment, said he would recommend that accused be placed under observation in the goal to which he was sent.
