SIX MONTHS’ GAOL
———◦———
LAD’S BAD RECORD
————
OFFENCE AT MINMI
————
Six months’ gaol was the sentence imposed by Mr Le Brun Brown, SM< at the Newcastle Police Court this morning, on a 16-year-old Minmi lad, Francis John Moore, for a serious offence committed at Minmi on October 10.
The defendant was released recently after serving two years in a reformatory for a similar offence. He was sentenced, on that occasion, to five years’ detention, but was released after serving part of the sentence.
Constable Brady said that about 5 pm on October 10 a young girl was picking flowers on the edge of the Minmi-Wallsend road. Defendant came up to her and asked her if she wanted some flowers. He then handed her a bunch of flowers and made a remark which the girl resented. She threw the flowers in his face and ran away. He then committed the offence with which he was charged.

A YOUTHFUL OFFENDER.
Francis John Moore (16), who pleaded guilty to a charge of improper behaviour [exposing his person] at Minmi, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment. Constable H Brady told the magistrate that on the afternoon of October 10 the defendant made improper suggestions to a ten-year-old girl who was picking flowers on the Wallsend road. She ran away and the defendant chased her. The defendant had only just been released from a reformatory, having been sent there for a serious offence. Part of that sentence was remitted.

ASSAULTS.
Francis John Moore, 18 years of age, who pleaded guilty to committing an indecent assault on a girl 12½ years of age at West Maitland, was called up for sentence. His Honor, addressing the prisoner, said that he had a very bad record. He had already been committed on two charges of a similar nature. “Men like you,” said his Honor, “are an absolute danger. It is a crying shame and disgrace to this country that a father or mother cannot let a child go out without danger from men like you. If severe sentences do not stop this sort of thing, then Judges will have to resort to the use of the cat. It was by using the cat that garrotting was put an end to. In the meantime the only way is to make the sentences as severe as possible.” The prisoner was sentenced to penal servitude for ten years.
