———◦———
CLERK SENT TO GAOL.
——

William Adams, clerk, 49 years of age, was charged at the Central Police Court yesterday, before Mr McMahon, SM, with having stolen a gold pencil from Anthony Hordern, and Sons, Limited, valued at £1/5/ , on November 11.

Sergeant Napper, police prosecutor, said defendant had a long record. He had been convicted of receiving stolen goods, resisting the police, offensive behaviour, vagrancy, being a suspected person, and on other offences.

Mr McMahon, SM: He seems to be a fairly versatile sort of a man. He appears to be incorrigible.

Mr Roach, who appeared for the defendant, said most of his client’s troubles were caused by drink. He was at present working in a coal and wood yard.

Mr McMahon: He can’t steal much from there, can he? I don’t believe anything about his drinking. His type is too clever to drink. The city and suburbs are being over-run was [sic] crooks and criminals. When caught taking the pencil he caught hold of the shop inspector and abused her.

A sentence of six months’ hard labour was imposed by the magistrate.
