A NATURALISED GERMAN.

Franz Schubert (44), fireman, was charged, on remand, that on June 17th, being a naturalised subject of German origin, he was on a British ship, other than a ferry or bay or coastal vessel, trading only between ports in one State, without the permission of a naval or military authority. The magistrate, addressing the defendant remarked: “The authorities have good reason for limiting our movements to certain districts, and you have no right to disregard their orders.” A fine of £20, in default two months’ imprisonment, was recorded.

GERMAN FIREMAN REMANDED.

On a charge that on July 1st, and since the commencement of the war, he had failed to report himself at intervals of not more than seven days to a police officer, Heinrich Carl Hansen (42), fireman, a German subject, was remanded until the following day.

ALLEGED IMPROPER CONDUCT.

Albert Williams (38), soldier, on remand, was presented on four charges of improper behaviour at the Broadmeadow military camp, on different dates. Mr TA Braye (Messrs Braye and Cohen) represented defendant. Inspector Cook prosecuted. Plain-clothes Constable T[homas] G[regory] Ryan said that on June 28th he saw defendant at the Broadmeadow camp, and told him that as a result of a military inquiry he had been handed over to the police. Williams did not deny that the complaints made were true. “I have been working 18 hours a day,” he added. “It has been a big strain on me, and I have been worried.” At the Newcastle police station Williams told witness that he could recall most of the incidents alleged. Evidence concerning the alleged offences was given by four soldiers, [Arthur Edgar Walters; 2 Henry Charles Walters; 3 Robert James Stone; 4 and John Cyril Anderson], 5 Williams reserved his defence, and was committed for trial the Newcastle Quarter Sessions on August 8. On each of the four charges bail was allowed, self in £50, and one surety of £50, or two of £25—in all £200.
