TO THE EDITOR OF THE HERALD.
Sir,—A paragraph in to-day’s issue, representative “munitions,” informs us that “the Queensland State Munitions Committee is investigating the possibility of producing a khaki dye from native woods.” Now, I believe the committee can save its time and energy by informing itself of a discovery made some years ago at our Technological Museum, by Mr HG Smith, FCS. In the course of his valuable and monumental researches on the oils obtained from the genus eucalyptus—researches, I may say, much better known and esteemed abroad than here—he discovered a new substance which he named “Myrticolorin.” speaking from memory, this substance was obtained as a by-product by merely extracting the leaves of “Eucalyptus rostrats” with water after the volatile oil had been removed. This substance Mr Smith submitted to English dyers for experiment with various mordants. Among a fine series of colours returned by the dyers was, I believe, a khaki. No doubt Mr Smith has the colours by him, and can correct me if I am in error. Myrticolorin can be obtained cheaply and easily, and in comparative abundance, and now is the time to utilise it.
