QUARTER SESSIONS.
(Before Judge Rogers and juries.)
Mr Herbert Harris, Crown Prosecutor.
CONVICTED OF SERIOUS ASSAULT.
John Smith, 67, was convicted of a charge of having committed a serious [indecent] assault [on Agnes Mortimer, 8 years 7 months and Edward Mortimer, 11], at Newtown on March 20, and was sentenced to six months’ hard labour in Goulburn Gaol. Smith who said that he had never been in trouble before, asked to be dealt with as a first offender, but his Honor said that he could not take that course. When the prisoner was asked what prompted him to commit the offence, he told the Judge that he was impelled to do it by a species of insanity, which drew from his Honor the remark that it was insanity of a very dangerous kind.
