SYDNEY QUARTER SESSIONS.
———
(Before Judge Rogers.)

    Mr Browning, Crown prosecutor.

George Andrews was charged with having, on June 26, stolen a handbag, two razors, a fountain pen, and a pair of skates, the property of Henry Butler, pastrycook, of Bourke-street, city. According to the Crown prosecutor the accused went to Butler, told him that he was ill, and just out of hospital, and asked for employment. Butler found him some light work, fed him, and gave him a few shillings for the work done. Subsequently the property mentioned was missed, and traced to the accused, who denied the charge. The jury returned a verdict of guilty, and his Honor, in passing sentence, described the accused as an ungrateful person. There were very few people who would so far have sympathised with him as to provide him with beef tea while at his work. The sentence was nine months’ imprisonment in Goulburn gaol.

CHARGE OF THEFT.

George Andrews was charged with stealing a handbag, a pair of skates, a fountain-pen, and two razors, the property of Henry Butler, a pastrycook, carrying on business in Bourke-street, Woolloomooloo, on June 26 last. Accused, who was undefended, pleaded not guilty.

The case for the Crown was that the prosecutor found light employment for the accused, and after he left the goods were found missing. When arrested a fountain-pen was found on accused.
