…
At the Parramatta Quarter Sessions on Monday last Charles Bennett pleaded guilty to a charge of having, on the 8th November, at St Marys, committed an unnatural offence on a male person, named Edward Weyman. In reply to a question by His Honor, the police read from a record statement that, at the Police Court, Penrith, in the year 1896, accused was convicted of stealing from a dwelling and was sentenced to two years in the Carpenterian Asylum for the correction of boys. His Honor said that, had it not been for the conviction disclosed, he would have dealt with accused under First Offender’s Act , which, under the circumstances could not be done. Accused was sentenced to six months hard labor.
