SUNDAY BREAKFASTS
FOR THE POOR

At the annual tea meeting, held on Friday last, of the friends of the movement for providing Sunday breakfasts for tho poor, the Secretary read a report, by which it appears that this effort was begun fourteen years ago by the late Mr AB Armstrong and others; and is still carried out by Mrs Armstrong, his son, Mr John Armstrong, Mr and Mrs John Ayers, Mr JP Jones, and Mr W Druce.

During the year ending Good Friday, 1876, there was received £90-10s, and expended £80-18s-10d.

By land and by sea people in extreme destitution are frequently arriving in Sydney, so that there is an evident necessity for such a charity.

THE FATE OF AN OLD COLONIST.

At the Police Court, Young, on Thursday last, an old man named James Johnston was brought up for protection, having been found lying in the bush in a most deplorable state. It seems from the Chronicle that he had been shepherding in the vicinity of the Burramunda station, had gone into the bush for some purpose, and was unable to get back again. He says he came to the colony as a boy with his father in the year 1821, and since then had done all kinds of rough work. He tells many interesting incidents which occurred years back, and refers to the time of Governor Macquarie. The poor old man was sent to gaol for seven days previous to being forwarded to the asylum.
