JURYMAN REPRIMANDED
BY JUDGE ARMSTRONG
———◦———
“WHAT ROT ARE YOU TALKING?”
————

Sydney, Thursday.

Accepting a regulation plea of “not guilty” in a case where guilt was clearly established, a Darlinghurst juryman found himself swiftly rebuffed by Judge Armstrong yesterday.

Joseph Michael Holland, a laborer, was accused of committing an assault on a schoolboy. He pleaded not guilty, but statements were tendered, signed by him, admitting the facts.

Without summing up his Honor asked the jury to consider its verdict.

Up jumped a juryman. “Not guilty on the ground that there is not sufficient evidence,” he announced.

“Mr Juryman, Mr Juryman,” exclaimed the Judge. “What rot are you talking? It’s overwhelming, man, overwhelming.”

At this stage a second juryman rose and announced a verdict of guilty with recommendation for medical observation.

Medical evidence was tendered that Holland was slightly mental.

He was sent to Long Bay for three years, with a promise that the judge would recommend his release, if he recovered.
