MT. ISA NOTES
————

MT. ISA, December 14.—A further 75 points of rain has fallen here since my last notes.

A shocking accident occurred on the Mt. Isa-Camooweal Road, about 40 miles from here, last Thursday evening, when two men were killed outright and four others injured, one of whom has since died. Those killed out-right were: Norman Roberts, age 38, married, of Malanda, and Geoffrey Raymond Russell, 27, married of Abbotsford Road, Bowen Hills, Brisbane. Dennis William Langdon, 28, single, of 25 Abbotsford Road, Bowen Hills, Brisbane, met with severe injuries to his head and thigh, and has since died. A fourth member of the party was Herbert Wynne McLain, 30, married, of Pitt-street, Annerley, Brisbane, and his condition is stated to be satisfactory. The driver of the truck Jack Guymer, escaped with slight injuries, as also did Clyde Jenkin, who was the sixth member with a truck that was crashed into. It is stated that the truck in which these six men were travelling, stalled on the road, and it was pulled on one side so that repairs could be effected, and whilst there, another truck, loaded, came along and bumped into it. Luckily there was a doctor in the vicinity, and he was contacted and the injured men attended to and sent to Mt Isa hospital. The funerals of Messrs Norman Roberts, Geoffrey [Raymond] Russell and Dennis Langdon, were largely attended.

Cloncurry Advocate, Fri 18 Dec 1942 10

SHOCKING ROAD
ACCIDENT
————
THREE DEAD—THREE INJURED
————

Mt Isa, Monday.

A shocking accident occurred on the Mount Isa—Camooweal Road, about 30 miles from Mount Isa, on Thursday afternoon last, resulting in the immediate death of two men and causing fatal injuries to another who died on Saturday morning last.

It appears that MR Commission truck had stalled on the road and was pulled to the site, where the driver and others were endeavouring to put the engine in order. There were a number of trucks passing, but apparently the men in the Main Roads truck were intent on their work of getting the truck going again and they took little notice of the passing vehicles.

It is said where the accident occurred there is a long piece of straight road, so that there is no question of a bend.

However, a truck driven by a coloured man, and said to be travelling at about 16 mph, struck the stationary Main Roads vehicle fair in the centre of the tailboard, with the result that Norman Roberts (38), married, of Malande (NQ) and Geoffrey Raymond Russell (27), married, of Abbotsford Road, Bowen Hills, Brisbane, were killed instantly; and Dennis William Langdon (29), single, of 25 Abbotsford Road, Bowen Hills, Brisbane, suffered a fractured skull and broken thigh, to which injuries he succumbed in the Mt Isa Hospital at 6.45 am on Saturday last.

Herbert Wynne McLain (30), married, of Pitt Street, Annerley, Brisbane, also suffered a fractured skull, and he is in the district hospital.

Two other men—Clyde Jenkin, single, of Cloncurry, and John Guymer, the driver of the Main Roads truck were also slightly injured and both men are still suffering from shock.

Luckily for the injured, there had them transferred to the Mt Isa and he came to the rescue of the men and after rendering first aid, had them transferred to the Mt Isa Hospital.

The funeral of two of the victims (Norman Roberts and Geoffrey Russell) took place on Friday evening, the Rev Bro Drury officiating at the graveside of both. Roberts was ganger on the work and had only just returned to work after enjoying holidays.

The body of Dennis William Langdon was interred in the local cemetery.
