SHOPLIFTING.
———◦———
FIVE PERSONS CONVICTED.
——

Five shoplifters—three women and two men—were convicted at the Central Police Court yesterday.

Ruby Brilliant, 33, was charged with having stolen a vest valued at £3/14/6, the property of McDowells, Ltd, and a hat valued at £3/18/6, the property of Sydney Snow, Ltd. On each charge she was fined £5, in default one month’s imprisonment. It was said that the defendant was a married woman, who recently came from the country. The vest was found in her possession in McDowells’ shop. A search of the room she occupied revealed the hat.

Annie Harding, 46, was fined £5 on a charge of having stolen a pair of stockings valued at 1/11, the property of Sydney Snow, Ltd. A shop inspector said that she saw Harding pick up the stockings and put them under her coat.

“If you come here again I will send you to prison, even if the goods are worth only twopence,” said Mr Laidlaw, SM, when he was informed that Harding had been fined for shoplifting in February of this year.

Cordelia Tygert, 40, was fined £5 for having stolen a brooch valued at 9/11 from David Jones, Ltd’s store.

Con Carrol, 39, a clerk, was charged with having stolen a powder-box, the property of David Jones, Ltd. It was stated that, after purchasing several boxes of powder, he slipped another box into his possession. He was released on a bond to be of good behaviour for 12 months.

Thomas Faber, 59, labourer, was fined £2 on each of two charges of having stolen goods from Goldman’s Ltd, and Nock and Kirby. Constable King said that when he questioned Faber in Nock and Kirby’s shop he found in his possession a pair of boots, which had been stolen from outside Goldman’s store earlier in the day.
