———
The fact that a girl held a thief, whom she discovered in her room, until the police arrived, was related at the Central Police Court yesterday, when William O’Keefe, 43, a fireman, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment for stealing a raincoat valued at £2.
Phyllis Norma Hadley, daughter of the licensee of Cockran’s Hotel, Bay-street, said that she awoke on June 22 to see a man in her room, near the chest of drawers. When she jumped out of bed the man dropped her raincoat on the floor. Witness held O’Keefe until the police arrived.

FATAL ACCIDENT.
———◦———
MAN’S NECK BROKEN.
———
Thomas Matthew Walsh, aged 41 years, of Beacon Hill, Brookvale, was fatally injured at Brookvale yesterday while gathering firewood.
The accident was witnessed only by Walsh’s eight-year-old son, who had accompanied him into the bush. That lad stated that his father was carrying a heavy log to the waiting cart when he appeared to stumble and fall. The log fell across his neck, and he did not answer when the boy spoke to him. Running to the nearest house the boy obtained assistance. When Walsh was examined subsequently at the Manly Cottage Hospital he was found to have died from a broken neck.
