ESTATE AGENT CONVICTED.
———
At the Parramatta Quarter Sessions yesterday Edward Thomas, an estate agent, of Liverpool, was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment with hard labour on a charge of having fraudulently misappropriated £30, the property of Mrs Lucy Taylor.
Evidence showed that accused had sold a block of land to Mrs Taylor, and had not paid her the money he had received.
Accused, in defence, said he had sent Mrs Taylor cheques for the amount, but these had been returned because the bank had not honoured an agreement to give him an overdraft.
“You have set up a skilful and plausible defence, and have done your best to run rings round this old lady,” remarked Judge Armstrong, in sentencing the accused. He added that if Thomas repaid the money he would consider a reduction of the sentence.
