[KOGARAH] POLICE COURT
———◦———
Before Mr Jennings, SM.
————

…

“WHERE DID YOU GET
THAT HAT.”

Keith Collis, milk carter, was charged with stealing a leather bag, hat and 14/- in money, to the value of £3, the property of Frederick Gage, Penshurst. He was also charged with stealing two wallets, razor, and handkerchief valued at £4 10s, the property of John McGowen, of Penshurst.

Sergeant Harrowsmith deposed that on March 28 he saw the defendant at Kogarah Police Station in charge of Constable Kincade. He (witness) asked defendant, “Where did you get that hat you are wearing?” Defendant said, “I took it from Gage’s.” I told him several other articles were missing. Defendant acknowledged taking them, and was willing to make good the articles taken.

Frederick Gage, Penshurst, dairyman, said the defendant had been in his employ as milk carter. After defendant had left witness missed a leather bag containing 18/- and a felt hat from a bedroom. He identified the hat produced as his property; the leather bag was fond hanging on the fence—the money was missing.

In answer to Mr Seabrook, who appeared for the defendant, witness said the milk carters worked long hours. He also remembered a man named Jack Turner who obtained a verdict for overtime. Witness did not remember an old green hat in the yellow cart; the lost hat had been replaced by a new one.

John McGovern [sic], employed by Gage, said that on the 25th March he missed two wallets and razor and handkerchief from his room, valued £4 10s; the razor had been returned.

Mr Seabrook said the defendant was only a young man and only went to this extreme because he thought he was entitled to more money than he was getting: in each case the goods had been returned.

The defendant was sentenced to 14 days, to be suspended on finding two securities for £20 each.
