QUARTER SESSIONS.
————
Wednesday morning—(Before his Honor Judge Scholes)
————

…
In the case of JH Hickson and Edward Milson, who were found guilty by the jury on Tuesday for attempting to commit an abominable offence. JH Hickson was sentenced to two years’ hard labor in Goulburn gaol. Edward Milson was sentenced to twelve months’ hard labor in Goulburn gaol.

The Judge in summing up stated that the verdict of the jury had been arrived at upon the clearest possible evidence. The legal defence had been clear but of no avail, and he felt that drink had been in a great measure the cause of their actions. The duty before him was a painful one, but justice must be done.

During the passing of sentence both accused were visibly affected.
…

LOCAL AND GENERAL.

————
BENGOUGH.

The residents of Inverell will have the pleasure of seeing this entertainer to-night in the Town Hall. Bengough has received the highest press notice in the city and while on tour.

————
HOMEBUSWH STOCK SALES.

Messrs Harrison Jones and Devlin wired us from Homebush yesterday:—40,000 sheep were penned; prime were 1s better, other firmer; lambs were firm; 1440 cattle were yarded; prices lower.

————
METHODIST CHURCH.

On Sunday evening next the subject of Rev W Atkinson’s services will be “Play the Game.” The service will be of special interest to men who are cordially invited. Solos will be rendered by Miss Finlen and Mr Walters.

————
ALBERTO.

We note that Alberto is billed to appear in Moree to-night. The company was billed to appear here a week or more ago, but for some unexplained reason did not arrive. No doubt he will visit here after doing Moree.

————
MOREE ODFELLOW'S [sic] LODGE.

The annual plain and fancy dress ball held on Monday last under the auspices of the Loyal Pride of Moree Manchester Unity Lodge was a brilliant success, and counted as one of the most successful functions ever held in the district.

————
INVERELL IRON FOUNDARY. [sic]

It is pleasing to learns that so far the support accorded to this new establishment is very satisfactory, and the prospects are good. Mr Gibson informs us that he has received orders during the past few days that will keep them busy. (May it always be so.)

————
THE BRUSH.

We have noticed on view at the Nage Studios a splendid enlargement done in water colors, of that well-known racehorse “Zelle,” owned by Mr Gale. The work is splendidly finished, and has that animated appearance so often lacking in the “brush” production of animal life. Lovers of the art should not fail to inspect.

————
YOUR ATTENTION.

Is drawn to Mr McRobert’s clearance sale which was to have been held on the 9th, but owing to certain circumstances was postponed, and will now be held on Wednesday afternoon next the 16th. A free bus will leave the office of Messrs Borthwick & Bice, auctioneers, at 10 am on that morning for intending purchasers.

————
McLEAN & LYDIARFD’S SALE.

McLean, Lydiard & Co Ltd, advise us that their Sale will continue for a fortnight longer, during which time it is intended to clear every line of Mr WH Doust’s stock. Prices will be further reduced in order to make the clearance more speedy and effective. The firm’s advertisement bearing on this was received too late for publication.

————
UP-TO-DATE WORKS.

Inverell can claim to have some up-to-date works in many lines, and amongst those in the running is McBean’s coach works in Byron-street. If you want something easy running have a look at his sulkies. Trotting sulkies and other vehicles all built locally with the latest modern improvement introduced. To those interested in wood carving Mr McBean can supply some splendid beech timber for that purpose.

————
LIGHT HORDE TOURNAMENT.

The annual tournament promoted by the Tamworth Half Squadron of the Sixth Australian Light Horse was held at Tamworth on Monday last. The re-union proved very successful. Amongst the winners we are pleased to note and congratulate, Sergt Makim, of Inverell, who came third in the lemon cutting competition, also Trooper McLachlan, of Inverell, who secured first place in the Alarm Race.

IS IT A BUNYIP?

A scare was caused during last week at Maitland Bar, a mining village situated four miles north-west of Hargraves, owing to a strange noise heard at night time. It is reported that about 11.30 nightly a noise is heard resembling sometimes a woman screaming; at others a child crying piteously. The cries remain a mystery up to the present time, as all attempts at solving it have proved futile. Diggers living in lonely places have left their homes, removing higher up the river, believing that there is safety in numbers.
