SITTINGS OF THE CRIMINAL
COURT.
———◦———

At the sittings of the criminal Court yesterday, before Mr Justice Williams,
…
A young man named Angus White was charged with stealing a watch, chain, and locket, the property of Dr JP Ryan. On the evening of the 23rd February, between 5 and 6 o’clock, Dr Ryan was bathing at Kenny’s baths, at St Kilda. He left his jewellery in his clothes, which he placed in one of the dressing rooms. When he came out of the water he discovered that his watch, chain, and locket had been removed. About 8 o’clock the same evening the prisoner sold the watch for 10s to Charles Souter, [sic] the barman at the Golden Fleece Hotel, Russell-street. On the 25th February the prisoner was seen by a constable, who asked him where he got the watch, and he said that he got it from a man up the street. The prisoner’s defence was that he got the watch from another man. He was found guilty. There was a previous conviction for a similar offence recorded against him. He was sentenced to 18 months’ hard labour, the first four days of each alternative month to be in solitary confinement. Mr R Walsh prosecuted on behalf of the Crown.
