A REVOLTING CASE.
————
Heard with Closed Doors.
THE comparatively unusual course of hearing a case with closed doors was resorted to by Mr Makinson, PM, at the Police Court this morning. The charge was one of indecent assault on a boy, [John James, 9 years of age], preferred against Thomas Lawless, an old man, a labourer, 60 years of age, who only finished serving a sentence of three months’ imprisonment on Tuesday.
The evidence given by the several witnesses was of a most revolting character, entirely unprintable.
Accused was committed to take his trial at the Quarter Sessions to be held on April 5.

QUARTER SESSIONS.
———
The Court of Quarter Sessions, before Judge Gibson, sat till 20 minutes past 6 o’clock last evening, when the hearing of the charge of assault on the Chinese, Ah Chick, was concluded. A full report appears in another column.
…
INDECENT ASSAULT.
On the court resuming this morning, Thos Lawless, an old man of 55, pleaded not guilty to having in December last indecently assaulted a small boy. The assault was alleged to have been committed late one night in one of the Proprietary’s dams after the performance of Fitzgerald’s circus. His Honor summed up against Lawless, and the jury return a verdict of guilty. His Honor, in sentencing accused to two years’ hard labor in Broken Hill gaol, pointed out that he had made himself liable to a long term of penal servitude. Had he injured the boy at all, his Honor would have ordered him to be flogged; as it was, he had to say that prisoner was a very dirty man.
