CHARGE OF INDECENT
ASSAULT.
———◦———

At the Wagga Police Court yesterday, before Mr H Baylis, PM, August Rabel [sic], a German, 65 years of age, was charged with indecently assaulting a child 5 years of age at The Rock on Sunday last.

Constable Davidson deposed to the arrest of the prisoner at the Hanging Rock on the previous day, when he denied the offence, stating that he was incapable and could do no work, being then travelling about with a magic lantern. When charged with the offence the prisoner stated the parents of the child would have to prove it, and denied disarranging the child’s clothing.

Evidence was given by the mother of the child to the effect that she saw the prisoner with the child sitting on a box in the back yard of her premises, and holding her with one hand while he was placing the other under the child’s clothing. The child made a statement in which she said the prisoner promised to buy her some lollies, but that there were none in the store. He gave her some dates.

A little boy aged six who was playing in the yard at the time corroborated the evidence for the prosecution, and the prisoner was committed for trial at the next court of Quarter Sessions at Wagga, the date of which is to be fixed.
