A BOGUS COLLECTOR.
————
SENT TO GAOL.
————
Alexander Fleet, 28, described as a collector, was charged at the Glebe Police Court yesterday with having attempted to obtain one guinea from Dr JF Lovegrove by means of a false representation with intent to defraud. The evidence for the prosecution was that the accused visited the residence of Dr Lovegrove, in Norwood-street, Petersham, February last, and said that he had come for the usual subscription of one guinea given by the doctor to the Leichhardt Rowing Club. He obtained a like amount from the doctor the previous year, and a former occasion the prosecutor gave him a guinea for a cricket club. Fleet represented that he was secretary of the clubs mentioned. However, the doctor made inquires, and discovered that he was an impostor., so that when he put in an appearance for the subscription on the this occasion, the doctor went to the telephone to communicate with the police; but the accused in the meantime made himself scarce. There was a further charge against Fleet of having attempted to obtain 10s 6d from Dr Richard Lougher, of Norton-street, Leichhardt, by similar means, on October 3 last. Since then the doctor had seen the accused several times, and on Monday last he gave him in charge to Senior-constable McGovern near the Australia Hotel. It appeared that the accused called on the doctor, and said, “Doctor, you have not sent me that cheque!” “Come in,” said the doctor. “You said you were the secretary of the Leichhardt Football Club?” “No,” replied Fleet; “I did not say I was the secretary.” “Yes, you did; but you are an impostor, and I will give you in charge,” was the doctor’s reply. Accused invited prosecutor to accompany him to the police station, but the next moment, when the doctor stepped back to get his hat, he slammed the door between them, and bolted, followed by prosecutor and a constable, who joint in the chase. He, however, got away, and succeeded in evading the police until Monday last. He had obtained two subscriptions of a guinea and 10s 6d from the doctor ob previous occasions. Accused, who had, it was stated, served two and a half years’ imprisonment for a shocking offence, pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to three months’ hard labor on each charge, the terms to be cumulative.
